How To Cook Rice - With Video

I think all people struggle a little bit when they first start cooking rice. There are so many different methods out there on how to cook rice “perfectly”. Some of those methods are easy, some are hard.
This method is easy, I think, and I hope it works for you!

White Rice
1 cup rice
1 1/2 cups water

Brown Rice
1 cup rice
2 cups water

In a medium pot, over high heat, boil water. Add rice and, if desired, add a pinch of salt. Let the water return to a heavy boil. Once the water level has gone down, and rice appears dry, turn heat to low for one minute. If  I’m making more than one cup, I add thirty seconds for every additional cup of rice. After the minute, turn off heat or remove from heat. Keep the lid on the pot until you are ready to serve the rice.

Sometimes, it doesn’t seem to matter what method we use, the rice just doesn’t turn out! It’s extremely annoying, because it seems like that only ever happens when there is company over, or dinner portions are a little small. No worries!
If the rice is cooked through, but there is still lots of water, just put the rice on a cookie sheet and slide that into a hot oven. Give the rice 5-10 minutes, and it should have dried up enough to not feel like oatmeal.
If the rice is still crunchy, but the water is all gone, just add a little bit of boiling water to the rice, and keep the heat low. Add boiling water and continue cooking rice until the desired “fineness” has been achieved.

If you really want to get fancy, change out the water for chicken or beef broth. Sometimes I like to throw cilantro in my rice (after it’s been cooked) and lemon (before it’s been cooked). Every once in a while, when I feel like making one brother in particular extra happy, I throw a couple of jalapeños into to the rice before cooking. Rice really is an amazing staple! It can be used for so many different flavors, and kinds, of cooking.
Don’t be afraid to experiment - to throw a little excitement into the pot!

Enjoy!
